Yes, therapy really can be free.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Have you ever heard of something called an Employee Assistance Program—also known as EAP? If not, you’re not alone. Most people either have no idea what it is or think it’s something outdated that doesn’t apply to them. But I’m here to tell you—EAPs are one of the best-kept secrets when it comes to getting short-term, free counseling in Kissimmee.
Yes, I said FREE. And no, this isn’t one of those “free with a catch” situations.
Let’s break it down, because if you’re working in 2025 and your employer offers an EAP, you might have access to completely confidential mental health services without paying a single dime out of pocket.
What Is an Employee Assistance Program (EAP)?
An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a benefit that some employers offer to help employees manage life’s challenges—whether those challenges are related to work or personal matters. Think of it as a built-in support system to help you stay healthy and balanced—emotionally, mentally, and sometimes even financially.
EAPs are designed to help with short-term concerns and connect you to professionals (like myself) who can guide you through whatever’s going on.
What Kind of Services Do EAPs Provide?
EAPs are much more than just mental health counseling (although that’s a huge part of it). Most programs offer a wide range of services, including:
-
Mental Health Support: Whether you’re dealing with stress, anxiety, depression, burnout, or just feeling stuck—EAP therapists are trained to help you navigate it.
-
Substance Use Help: Confidential support for alcohol or drug-related concerns, including access to resources and referrals.
-
Relationship and Family Counseling: Struggling in your marriage? Conflicts with kids? Family stress? EAPs often include sessions for couples or family support.
-
Legal and Financial Consultations: Many programs include access to legal professionals and financial advisors to help with debt, budgeting, or understanding your rights.
-
Workplace Stress and Burnout: EAP providers can help you work through job-related stress, conflict with coworkers, or difficulties managing work-life balance.
-
Grief and Loss Counseling: Dealing with the death of a loved one or other major life transitions? EAPs can provide immediate support and help you cope.
What I Love Most About EAPs
As a therapist who frequently works with EAP clients, I genuinely believe this is one of the most underutilized resources in mental health care. Here’s why I think everyone should know about them:
1. It’s 100% Confidential
This is the most common concern I hear. People ask, “Will my boss know I’m using it?” Absolutely not. Therapists who provide EAP services are bound by the same HIPAA laws that apply to all medical professionals. Unless you give written permission, your employer will not know the content of your sessions—or even that you attended therapy at all.
2. It’s Accessible Anytime
EAPs usually have a 24/7 helpline, so even if your therapist isn’t available right away, you can still get support or talk to someone immediately. And when it comes time to schedule therapy, they’ll help match you with someone based on your preferences—location, specialty, and even language or cultural background.
3. It’s Versatile
EAPs often offer a mix of support options—face-to-face counseling, virtual sessions, phone consultations, and more. Some even offer workbooks, webinars, and online tools to support your well-being in between sessions.
4. It’s Free to Use
Yes, really. Most EAPs offer between 3 and 8 free therapy sessions per issue. That means if you’re struggling with anxiety and use your sessions for that, and then later need help with a family issue, you may be eligible for more sessions.
Once your EAP sessions run out, your therapist can discuss options for continued care, which may involve billing your health insurance or using a self-pay rate.
A Quick Word About Long-Term Therapy
It’s important to understand that EAPs are intended for short-term support. If you need longer-term care (which many people do!), your therapist will guide you through what that transition looks like—whether it’s using your insurance or continuing with private pay.
Who Offers EAPs?
Many large employers and government agencies provide EAP benefits, and more small- to mid-sized companies are beginning to follow suit. If you work at a place like Walt Disney World in Orlando, you likely have access to an EAP. You can typically find out by contacting your HR department or checking your employee portal.

Final Thoughts: Therapy Doesn’t Have to Be Out of Reach
Mental health is just as important as physical health—and access to care shouldn’t feel impossible. If you’ve been putting off therapy because of the cost, check with your employer today about EAP services. You might be surprised by how much free help you can access.
