Faith-Based Counseling. Biblical Counseling.

What’s Faith-Based Counseling?

According to research, about 75% of Americans say that their approach to life is influenced by their spiritual beliefs. Therefore, for those whose lives are guided by religious principles, it is critical to their healing. This is because it helps the therapist understand the patient’s background, boundaries, and morals. Ignoring or misunderstanding this can significantly hinder the benefits of therapy.

Our approach to faith-based counseling includes using Biblical principles and prayer, if desired, during the therapeutic process. While we provide faith-based counseling, we understand that not all of our clients share the same belief system. Therefore, this approach is only implemented upon request.

The goals of faith-based counseling will be determined by the patient in conjunction with their counselor.

Some of these goals might include:

  • Learning how to forgive others or oneself, and how to ask for forgiveness
  • Learning how to use spiritual or religious interventions to deepen one’s faith and increase coping skills
  • Finding the purpose and meaning in life
  • Making sense of suffering and challenges in one’s life
  • Navigating through religious abuse*

Some Signs Of Spiritual Abuse

  • Intimidation to conformity
  • Censorship from asking questions
  • Public shaming
  • Threats
  • Using scripture to justify physical, sexual, or emotional abuse or demand sexual acts or favors
  • Being forced to attend religious gatherings
  • Coercion for the purpose of shaming or to submit
  • Excessive punishment

Effects of Religious Abuse

Seeking help with a faith-based counselor could be a good place to start if you are experiencing religious abuse. A therapist can listen without judgment and can help you sort out your feelings and regain emotional stability.

Physical scars may heal, but spiritual abuse may leave deeper emotional and mental scars. Some effects of religious abuse according to Choosing Therapy include:
