Family Counseling. Blended Family Counseling.

When to seek help and how to decide if family counseling is right for you.

Although most families have a lot of resiliency, even the best families can feel the need for help.

Deciding if marriage and family therapy is right for your family can be a big decision, and may feel as a defeat, failure, and/or weakness. Nothing could be further from the truth. In reality, choosing family counseling can be a big step forward into adding some tools to your family’s relationship that can be of great help. You can learn new ways to communicate better, work through problems together, learn proper ways of discipline, and relate to one another.

If your family is experiencing one or more of these symptoms, it may be time to consider engaging the services of qualified professional marriage and family therapist:

  • Feeling burned out or having difficulty functioning at your ‘normal’ capacity
  • You or members of your family feel angry, sad, fearful, or depressed most of the time
  • Breakdown of communication or it’s increasingly more difficult to communicate without outbursts
  • You or family members experiencing the “silent treatment” more than usual
  • Family members are withdrawing from family life
  • One or more family members going into seclusion
  • Violence, or threat of violence or assault
  • A feeling of constant stress that’s too much to bear
  • Changes in adolescent behavior at home or at school; attendance problems, disruptive behavior
  • Not being able to cope with divorce, affair, death, separation,  grief, and/or difficulty adjusting to a new reality or change
  • Substance abuse programs or eating disorders

We provide family counseling (including parent-child relationships) to address several issues that may arise. Our services strive to promote harmony and wellbeing. It can help you and your family members understand one another better and learn coping skills to bring you closer together.

Family therapy can be a helpful approach in areas of distress, conflict, and mental health concerns and can be helpful with:

  • Parent-Child Conflict
  • Sibling Conflict
  • Support after a traumatic event
  • Loss of another family member
  • Planning for an aging parent or medical issue
  • Blended family dynamics or step parenting
  • Co-parenting after separation or divorce
  • Communication difficulties with adolescents, and adult children
  • Political beliefs and family dynamics
  • Parenting through abandonment

Benefits of Family Therapy

  • Explore and find solutions that may actually work for the family unit.
  • Providing a safe space for families to discuss otherwise uncomfortable topics; sometimes topics that may be very uncomfortable are being put off due to the fear that may result in long-term damage to certain family members. A therapist can help mediate communication and manage potential escalation.
  • Guidance in breaking negative cycles of distress; some stressors may last years with no resolution from past conflicts and pain. Family therapy can help overcome these barriers.
  •  Expert guidance may help resolve complex problems that have not been resolved due to ignorance, lack of resources, or simply not knowing the “right” steps to make complicated decisions.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Why keep suffering?

Family therapy typically brings family members together for therapy sessions. However, a family member may also see a family therapist individually first.

Our therapeutic approach when working with families is a collaborative and inclusive approach in which parents and children are mutually provided with the opportunity to express their concerns and reach reasonable solutions with the goal of improving communication and the overall wellbeing of their relationship.
